Deputy Chief Steve Ober Wins Chemical Safety Award

Deputy Chief Steve Ober of the Miami Township Fire Department has been awarded the Alliance for Chemical Safety's "Second Mile" award for going the extra (or second) mile in furthering the Alliance's mission to improve chemical safety in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Chief Ober received the award during the Alliance's sixth annual Awards Banquet on January 17, 2007 at Cincinnati State.

Chief Ober has worked for the Miami Township Fire Department since 1981. He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1998 and to Deputy Chief in 2005. Here are just some of the reasons why he received this award:

        • Since 2003, Chief Ober has helped the Miami Township Fire Department grow from two trained Hazardous Material Technicians to 17.
  • Through his relationships with area industry, he has enabled each HazMat Technician to expand his training around specific hazards at each facility. Three of these companies are Alliance members: Agrium (formerly Royster-Clark Nitrogen), DuPont Specialty Chemicals and LANXESS - Lustran Polymers.
  • Through cooperation with area industry, Chief Ober has enabled 10 HazMat Technicians to receive advanced fire/hazmat training. Six firefighters went to the Texas A&M firefighting school through grants from LANXESS and Marathon-Ashland, and four firefighters went to the Department of Energy's Hazardous Materials Training Facility in Nevada through a grant from DuPont.
  • Chief Ober has ensured good communications during potential and real emergencies by placing a Hamilton County emergency communications radio at five area industries, including Agrium, DuPont and LANXESS.

  • Chief Ober participates on the Brower Road Community Advisory Panel (which includes DuPont and Agrium) and the LANXESS Public Advisory Group.
  • Chief Ober established a cooperative agreement between Miami Township Fire and the City of Harrison's Hazardous Materials Team, and then arranged for and conducted joint training drills.
  • Chief Ober has promoted Shelter In Place throughout the township by holding a Shelter In Place drill at a local elementary school and by handing out Shelter In Place materials at local festivals.
  • Chief Ober worked with the Addyston Environmental Task Force and developed an emergency response plan for the Village of Addyston.
  • Chief Ober helped coordinate a large emergency response drill in Addyston that involved a mock Shelter In Place for residents.

The Alliance for Chemical Safety is a local, non-profit group dedicated to improving chemical safety in the Tri-State. The group has a diverse membership, including industry, government, emergency responders, and citizens.

Miami Township Fire Dept. Receives Donation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MIAMI TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT AWARDED DONATION FOR NEW EMERGENCY RESPONSE EQUIPMENT
Township Nominated by Local Employee of Acordia Insurance Brokerage

Miami Twp, OH., August 23, 2006 - Acordia, a Wells Fargo Company and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company (Fireman's Fund) have made a $1,000 donation to the Miami Township Fire Department. The donation will fund, in par-t, the purchase of a rabbit tool, crash kit and tiger saw. This equipment will be immediately put to use within the department for vehicle and forcible entry emergencies to search for trapped occupants. In addition, crash kits are
used to support quick medical aid at the scene of an accident before medical help arrives.

"'We were excited to hear that we had received this contribution to help us purchase new emergency response tools for our
department," said Deputy Chief Steve Ober of the Miami Township Fire Department. "Because of all the demands placed on a fire department's budget, sometimes we just don't have enough money to replace old or add new equipment."

The award was given as part of a recent Fireman's Fund Insurance Company meeting that was designed to highlight both the company's insurance products and the Fireman's Fund Heritagesm program through which Fireman's Fund awards millions of dollars in grants each year to fire departments across the country for needed equipment, firefighter training and community education programs.

One lucky attendee from the meeting was given the opportunity to nominate a fire department to receive a $1,000 donation to underscore the program's importance in Ohio. Judi Botkins of Acordia was the winner of the drawing, and directed the donation to the Miami Township Fire Department.

"Our local firefighters provide a tremendous service to the community and I am proud to show our support to these dedicated men and women," said Judi Botkins, with Acordia Cincinnati office. "We are honored to award this donation to our local fire department and help make our community safer."

Miami Township Fire Dept. Receives FEMA Grant
On March 3, 2006 the Miami Township Fire Department was awarded a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from FEMA. The money will be used to purchase a Fire Safety House for public education. Delivery will take up to one year.
